Christians: Reverse Gay Agenda in Illinois Law

As same-sex civil unions are set to begin in Illinois next week, Christians rallied to launch a 600,000-strong grassroots petition drive to press for a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a man and a woman.

"It’s time to say NO, we will not dilute the Family unit created by God and we won’t give up our moral values as did Illinois’ Politicians, the Judas of today, who sell their souls to the Devil in exchange for a few pieces of silver."

Busloads of opponents gathered in front of St. Peter's Church, where members of Americans for Truth distributed forms to collect signatures to put civil unions to a popular vote. Meanwhile, a smaller contingent of gays and supporters assembled on the other side of the 100 block of West Madison Street to defend the law that puts same-sex couples on a legal par with married men and women.

"There's a battle between gay rights and religious freedom," said Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth. "We want to give Illinois voters the same opportunity other states have had. Whether they are red or blue, states seem to go the same way."

Members of the gay community said while the new law represents a milestone, more work needs to be done.

Leaders in Illinois are working to give citizens a chance to vote on a traditional marriage advisory referendum.

Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), points out that citizens in 31 other states have already had such a vote, and it is time Illinois is rewarded the same opportunity.

"If you listen to homosexual activists across the nation, they're incredibly charging that if you stand for traditional marriage, you are the equivalent of a racist...a hater and a bigot. And it's the most outrageous overreach I've ever seen in my 20-odd years of politics," he admits.
