Colorado College Bans Bible Talk, OKs Swear Words

The Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO solicited graduate Michael Lucas for money to fund the new Clear Creek Athletics Complex in exchange for a permanent locker plaque with his name and his choice of a commemorative phrase, but now after donating $2,500, he is suing the President and the Board of Trustees of the college in federal court for censoring his chosen inscription.  The college said that his choice of the words “Colossians 3:23 and Micah 5:9” was unconstitutional, while other donors' choices of “Give ‘Em Hell” and “Take your whiskey clear” were approved.
“The Colorado School of Mines seems to be more interested in silencing or censoring speech that they don’t agree with and specifically religious speech.”

-- From "Lawsuit Filed Against Colorado School Of Mines Over Locker Plaque" posted at CBS News KCNC-TV4 (Denver, CO) 10/1/15

An email from the School of Mines states they have a policy against unlawful discrimination as a reason for turning down his request.

“It’s a ridiculous position to take to assert that somehow a reference to a Bible verse is inappropriate just because someone might go and look up that particular verse and it contains the word Lord,” said Decker.

Lucas finally agreed to have the passage itself inscribed for one of his Bible verses, Micah 5:9 “Your hand will be lifted up in triumph over your enemies, and all your foes will be destroyed.”

[. . . Lucas] says the school refused, saying the words “Lord,” “God,” or “Jesus” cannot be on the nameplates. On top of that, he said Bible verses that include those words are also banned.

Lucas wanted Colossians 3:23 and Micah 5:9 on his donor plate, just the verse citations, not the actual text of the verse.

Colossians 3:23 reads “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Colorado School of Mines did not respond to request for comment in time for publication.

From "College loses cool over Bible verses" by Bob Unruh, World Net Daily 10/1/15

“Public colleges and universities should encourage, not shut down, the free exchange of ideas, especially in a forum like this. The school initially imposed no restrictions – or even guidelines – on the type of message a donor could include, and contrary to what the school is arguing, the First Amendment protects – not restricts – a simple reference to a Bible verse,” said ADF Legal Counsel Natalie Decker.

“It’s patently ridiculous to argue that a Bible reference that doesn’t include the text of the verse is somehow inappropriate simply because someone might look it up and see that ‘Lord’ is mentioned there,” she said.

“CSM officials objected because they said, after the fact, that nameplate quotes could not include the words ‘Lord,’ ‘God’ or ‘Jesus’ or make reference to Bible verses that contain those words. They claimed that to allow them would be a violation of the First Amendment,” ADF explained.
